As Indiana University continues to evolve its campuses and extend its impact across the state and beyond, we’re reflecting on one of our most meaningful partnerships—nearly four decades of collaboration rooted in trust, stewardship, and shared purpose.
Since 1986, Schmidt Associates has worked alongside IU to shape environments that welcome students, honor history, and plan for the future. From iconic buildings in Bloomington to transformative projects in Indianapolis, our relationship has grown in depth and purpose—anchored by a shared commitment to excellence in higher education.
Now, as Schmidt Associates approaches our 50th anniversary, we’re taking time to honor legacy relationships like this—those that exemplify long-term collaboration and enduring design.
Rotary Building: Bridging Past and Future

The Indiana University Indianapolis Rotary Building renovation exemplifies our full-service, future-focused approach. Originally built in 1931 as a children’s convalescent home, the building was sitting vacant until IU partnered with Schmidt Associates to reimagine it as faculty offices for the IU School of Medicine.
We preserved the historic character while transforming the interior into one of the most sought-after office spaces on campus. The project delivered high-performance systems within strict historic and structural constraints, including:
- Complete exterior restoration: windows, railings, masonry, and roof
- Flexible, daylight-filled interiors: modern finishes and furnishings
- Chilled beam HVAC system: a four-pipe active system for energy efficiency
- Post-occupancy optimization: retro-commissioning cut steam use by 60 percent and chilled water by 50 percent
The result: a LEED Silver-certified building that consistently ranks among the most comfortable on campus and earned an ASHRAE Technology Award for its energy performance.
As our work deepened in Indianapolis, so did our understanding of how IU envisions the student experience. That insight guided our approach to Ernie Pyle Hall, where welcoming new students became central to the design.
Ernie Pyle Hall: A New Welcome

Once home to the School of Journalism, Ernie Pyle Hall needed new life. Schmidt Associates led its transformation into IU’s Admissions Office and Welcome Center, revitalizing the building with new systems, reimagined interiors, and finishes that echo the limestone traditions of campus.
By combining collaborative classroom spaces with a warm, inviting entry experience, the project offers a forward-facing space rooted in legacy—one that greets each new student with a clear expression of IU’s values and future.
McCalla School: A Portal to the Past

While Ernie Pyle Hall redefined IU’s front door, other projects required us to reflect the university’s deep history and cultural legacy. At the heart of Bloomington, the historic 1907 McCalla School was reborn as a hub for public engagement with IU’s vast collections.
Now home to galleries, classrooms, labs, and multi-use space, it bridges academia and community. Behind the scenes, modern systems were tailored to protect and showcase everything from fossils to fine art. These upgrades included:
- HVAC and humidity control
- Technology infrastructure
- Fire suppression systems

Maxwell Hall: Preserving Sacred Ground

In a similar spirit of stewardship, our work on Maxwell Hall extended the legacy of historic preservation on one of IU’s most iconic campus sites.
Originally the university’s first library, Maxwell Hall now houses two art galleries and academic offices. The design integrated power, data, HVAC, and lighting systems seamlessly into the architectural fabric—supporting digital and physical exhibits while honoring the building’s rich history.
Indiana University Auditorium: Restoring a Cultural Icon

A centerpiece of IU Bloomington, the 1941 Indiana University Auditorium was renovated to enhance patron experience and attract top-tier touring productions. Schmidt Associates upgraded electrical systems, HVAC, life safety, accessibility, and finishes—modernizing the venue while restoring its historic character.
Premium seating, acoustical enhancements, and restored plaster and woodwork elevate the audience experience. A highlight was the careful refurbishment of Thomas Hart Benton’s iconic murals, preserving their place in Indiana’s cultural legacy.
Strategic Partnership: Beyond Design
Our legacy with Indiana University extends beyond individual buildings. As a long-term strategic partner, we’ve collaborated on initiatives like a campus-wide deferred maintenance study. By combining facility data with on-the-ground walkthroughs and stakeholder interviews, we helped IU develop a proactive, prioritized strategy for long-term stewardship.
This work reflects our role not just as designers, but as advisors—bringing foresight and insight to every step of the planning process.
