Maxwell Hall is a historic facility on IU’s most sacred ground (bordering Dunns Woods). Originally constructed in 1890 as IU’s first library, the facility’s function needed to transform while maintaining its unique aesthetic. The new program for the facility houses two galleries capable of supporting and showcasing the work of faculty and staff, as well as the offices and back-of-house support spaces. The larger gallery accommodates large scale lectures while the smaller focuses on digital art and display. Working closely with the faculty and staff, our solution accommodates a robust new infrastructure, including power, data, lighting, and HVAC, within carefully detailed architecture and interior solutions. The integration includes bulkheads, new casework, wall paneling, ceilings, blackout curtains, and new flooring—all to preserve the historic aesthetic while seamlessly allowing for rotating displays with disparate requirements.
