Where Careers Begin and Confidence Grows

At Schmidt Associates, internships aren’t about busy work, they’re about real experience. Our program gives students the opportunity to turn classroom knowledge into meaningful contributions, supported by mentorship that goes both ways. Whether you’re modeling in Revit, meeting with clients, or learning the business side of design, you’ll grow in confidence, capability, and clarity.

25 interns mentored. 5 studios represented. 1 future-forward firm.
Our interns don’t just learn—they lead, shape, and inspire.

A Program Built on Purpose

Internships open the door to meaningful growth, professional collaboration and lasting connections. That’s the foundation of Schmidt Associates’ internship program, where servant leadership shapes every step of the journey. Architectural graduate Myrisha Powell, who has coordinated the program for the past three years, understands the power of those relationships firsthand. Since stepping into the role, she has mentored 25 interns across disciplines, each one leaving a mark on the firm and on her personally.

“When I took on this responsibility, I hoped to support both the firm’s and students’ goals. I wanted them to leave feeling stronger professionally and personally. What I didn’t expect was how much each intern would impact me, too.”
Myrisha Powell, Architectural Graduate

A Culture of Belonging and Growth

Interns are welcomed into the rhythm of studio life and the culture of connection that defines Schmidt Associates. The leadership team is deeply involved, ensuring each student feels known and supported from day one.

Hear from Kathryn Roche, interior designer, as she reflects on her first days as an intern and how that experience still resonates today.

For many interns, that sense of belonging fuels both confidence and curiosity.

“The most rewarding part of my internship so far has been the connections I’m making and the professional growth I’ve experienced. Everything is completely new to me, and I can’t imagine a better environment to start my career.”
—Sydney Thies, Architectural Intern, Ball State University

Others, like Mason Will, found deeper purpose through their focus.

“I’ve learned how thoughtful design decisions can improve patient well-being. It’s a field that goes beyond aesthetics and function. It has the potential to support healing and save lives.”
—Mason Will, Architectural Intern, Ball State University

In engineering, collaboration revealed complexity and connection.

“This internship has really challenged me to step out of my comfort zone when it comes to asking questions. I’ve explored the strengths and complexities of design engineering and how it interacts with other disciplines.”
—Vian Tran, Mechanical Engineering Intern, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology

Raising Servant-Hearted Designers

Mentorship at Schmidt Associates is not just a tradition. It’s a responsibility. We believe the investment we make in future leaders today will shape the industry tomorrow. That’s why it’s woven into every part of studio life, from project collaboration to day-to-day guidance.

We’re not just passing on technical knowledge, we’re modeling how to lead with humility, empathy and a deep respect for others. Interns see firsthand how that approach informs both our design process and our relationships.

“Be open to anything—projects, meetings, new opportunities. There are so many moving parts in a multidisciplinary firm like this one, and so much to learn. By actively seeking out experiences, I’ve gained a much deeper understanding of the architecture and engineering process than I ever expected.”
—Josie Paxton, Marketing Intern, University of Cincinnati

Our interns shape more than drawings and documents—they shape the people around them. Their curiosity, insight and energy enrich our teams and remind us why teaching the next generation matters.

A Culture Strengthened by Diversity

Our internship program is an extension of our core belief: that great design includes everyone. We welcome students from a wide range of backgrounds, experiences and academic disciplines, recognizing that diversity—of age, culture, perspective and identity—makes us stronger and more innovative.

Interns don’t just bring talent, they bring fresh thinking that challenges us to grow as individuals and as a firm. Every voice is valued, and every contribution matters.
