First impressions matter—and at North Central High School, they’ve built a grand entrance that guides, welcomes, and inspires.

Part of a $202 million investment in K-12 school design by the Metropolitan School District of Washington Township (MSDWT), this transformation reflects a forward-thinking vision centered on clarity, community, and pride.

Among the many upgrades spanning educational, athletic, and community spaces, one feature stands out: the new light walls. These architectural elements are not only visually striking, but they also redefine functionality, symbolizing MSDWT’s progressive approach to modern school design.

A Vision for the Future: The Light Walls

At the heart of MSDWT’s campus transformation is the goal of fostering a welcoming atmosphere while prioritizing student and visitor experiences. Traditionally, the campus entrances were understated, leaving visitors searching for their destination. Schmidt Associates introduced the concept of light walls as a bold, creative solution to address this challenge.

“We wanted to create something that was not only functional but also inspired a sense of pride and place,” said Steve Schaecher, design architect at Schmidt Associates. “The light walls serve as beacons, reflecting the district’s commitment to thoughtful and inclusive design.”

The light walls support several key goals:

  • Enhance wayfinding, clearly defining entry points for students, staff, and visitors.
  • Foster identity by incorporating school branding and reinforcing pride in the district.
  • Inspire community pride by establishing the campus as a hub of innovation and connection.
From Concept to Campus: The Story Behind the Light Walls

The light walls are more than visually striking. They are innovative architectural solutions designed to enhance navigation and elevate the campus experience. Addressing MSDWT’s need for more defined and welcoming entry points, Schmidt Associates explored several early concepts, including LED curtains and uplighting. After refinement, the team selected LED tube lighting for its uniform glow.

“We weren’t just designing a light wall. We were creating a prototype,” said Schaecher. “This process, fueled by MSDWT’s vision, encouraged us to push boundaries and deliver a feature that is as functional as it is inspiring.”

Bringing this concept to life required collaboration. Early concerns about cost and complexity were resolved through a mockup process, ensuring the design was both innovative and practical.

Key successes from the mockup process included:

  • Lighting tests that achieved even illumination without hotspots.
  • Material alignment that integrated translucent panels with LED systems.
  • Durability checks that confirmed the walls could withstand daily wear in a high-traffic environment.

Each light wall was strategically placed:

  • Administrative entry: Welcomes visitors with custom branding, including the school’s logo.
  • Athletic entry: Guides students, families, and athletes to the Paul Loggan Fieldhouse, reinforcing school spirit.

These light walls reflect MSDWT’s vision for creating spaces that inspire pride and connection.

Lighting the Way Forward: A Transformative Step for MSDWT

The Metropolitan School District of Washington Township is redefining how K-12 educational spaces serve their communities by blending functionality with bold design. The glowing light walls at North Central High School symbolize the district’s forward-thinking vision, creating welcoming spaces where students thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

Visible from 86th Street, the light walls have already become an iconic campus feature, representing MSDWT’s commitment to innovation and connection.

“MSDWT has set a new standard for educational design by creating spaces that inspire and connect,” said Lisa Gomperts, project manager at Schmidt Associates. “We’re honored to play a role in their journey to enhance student experiences and community engagement.”
