How thoughtful design empowers early learners, expands college access, and revitalizes community spaces
Great design does more than shape buildings—it shapes lives. It supports equity in education, celebrates cultural identity, and gives people spaces where they feel seen, supported, and empowered to thrive.
Over the past year, we’ve had the privilege of helping clients bring bold ideas to life. From nurturing preschool environments to removing barriers in higher education to reimagining community landmarks, these projects reflect a shared commitment to people-first design.
Each story is unique, but they are united by the same values: empathy, collaboration, and the belief that the built environment can be a catalyst for lasting change.
A Brighter Beginning: Washington Township Early Learning Center
From the moment you step inside the new Early Learning Center in MSD of Washington Township, one thing is clear—this space was designed for children.
Natural light floods the interior. Child-height drinking fountains and sensory tables are scaled for little learners. Playful colors and treetop views create a calming, nature-connected environment. The message is simple and powerful: You belong here.
“It tells them that they are wanted here, that this is their space,” said Kristin Parisi, director of the Early Learning Center.
Home to Hilltop Developmental Preschool and an employee daycare, the center serves children ages 2 to 5. Classrooms are organized in neighborhood-style pods with sensory rooms and collaborative play zones to support early development.
Key design features include:
- Flexible furnishings for collaborative learning
- Raised ceilings and natural light to create openness
- Inclusive outdoor areas accessible to all students
- Calming rooms designed for sensory regulation
This project reflects a deep belief in dignity, trust, and independence—designed through close collaboration with educators and families.

Removing Barriers, Building Belonging: Butler University Founder’s College
Design doesn’t just support learning, it can open doors. At Butler University, Founder’s College does just that, offering a two-year, debt-free experience for high-ability students from low-wealth backgrounds.
Schmidt Associates helped transform a former seminary library into an inclusive, modern college environment where students feel welcomed and supported from day one.
“This is why we do what we do,” said Sara Richey, client liaison. “Founder’s College aligns perfectly with who we are—creating space that gives students a place to thrive. It’s work that will impact lives for generations.”
Design features that promote access and belonging:
- Collaboration zones and open lounges
- Private huddle rooms for mentorship and advising
- Warm, welcoming finishes and natural light throughout
Students who may have never pictured themselves on a college campus now walk into a space that says, You’re home.

Reviving a Landmark: Café Oztara at Damien Center
While the first two projects focus on new beginnings, Café Oztara is about honoring legacy while creating opportunity. In partnership with Damien Center, Schmidt Associates reimagined the former Zonie’s Closet—a cherished LGBTQ+ landmark—into Café Oztara, a flexible space for job coaching, cultural programming, and community connection.
“This space has always been part of the community, especially the LGBTQ+ community, and I wanted to preserve that familiarity,” said Liam Kiesling, senior interior designer.
Design strategies that honor history and create new purpose:
- Preserved stage and bar elements for cultural continuity
- Gallery lighting and movable furniture for art and events
- ADA-compliant access and intuitive wayfinding for inclusion
The café now welcomes more than 500 visitors annually — from job seekers to artists to neighborhood residents. It’s a restorative, affirming space built around trust and healing.
The Journey Continues
Whether we’re designing preschool classrooms, equitable college environments, or inclusive community hubs, our work is grounded in empathy and purpose. We’re honored to bring our clients’ visions to life—not just through buildings, but through meaningful outcomes.
As we look ahead to our 50th anniversary, we remain focused on what truly matters: creating places that transform lives.
