This story kicks off our Legacy Voices series—spotlighting the people who have shaped Schmidt Associates over the last 50 years and continue to guide our future. As we celebrate our 50th Anniversary, we invite you to explore the legacy behind the firm, one voice at a time.

Kevin Shelley’s four-decade career at Schmidt Associates spans more than 800 projects, but his greatest legacy lies in the people he’s mentored and the culture of servant leadership he’s helped shape. From intern to chief operations officer, Kevin has guided the firm with quiet strength, purpose, and a relentless focus on people-first design.

Finding Purpose in Architecture

Kevin didn’t just choose architecture; he found purpose in it. That purpose took shape at Ball State University’s College of Architecture and Planning, where he developed a passion for educational design and met Wayne Schmidt during a Habitat for Humanity design competition. It was the beginning of a lifelong commitment—not only to the craft of architecture but to a firm whose mission aligned with his own belief: that thoughtful design has the power to transform lives.

From Intern to Impact

Kevin joined Schmidt Associates as an intern in the late 1980s. By 1990, he was on staff full time, hand-drafting construction documents and taking on responsibility early. What followed was a career marked not by flash but by focus: more than 800 projects and more than three decades of building environments where people could learn, grow, and thrive.

His first major role as a licensed architect and project manager was leading the transformation of a former high school into the new Pittsboro Elementary School. The project was more than a renovation—it was a community investment. Kevin collaborated closely with teachers, administrators, and families to ensure the design honored the past while supporting the needs of young learners. That experience shaped his future approach, reinforcing the power of listening first, honoring stakeholder voices, and designing spaces that serve.

Coaching Through Complexity

As Schmidt Associates grew, so did Kevin’s influence. Rising to the position of chief operations officer, he became the steady hand behind the scenes, formalizing project management systems, launching professional development programs, and mentoring young professionals. But he never sought the spotlight.

“I see my role as more of a coach than a director. It’s about helping others discover their strengths, solve problems, and grow into the leaders they’re meant to be.”

KEVIN SHELLEY

That coaching mentality has left a lasting mark on the firm’s culture. Kevin’s guidance has shaped the leadership style of dozens of team members, many of whom credit him for instilling a mindset of responsibility, humility, and excellence.

Designing for Generations

Kevin’s design portfolio is vast, with highlights that include Plainfield High School, Ball State’s residence halls, the Indiana Farm Bureau Fall Creek Pavilion, and the Indianapolis Community Justice Campus. But to Kevin, these projects are more than square footage and accolades. They are the physical expression of a community’s hopes, and he sees his job as helping bring those hopes to life.

Whether planning a high school campus or modernizing student housing, Kevin consistently centers the voices of those most affected by the outcome. Teachers, students, families, and community leaders find in Kevin not just an architect but an advocate.

A Legacy of Leadership

Kevin’s legacy is felt far beyond blueprints and buildings. It lives in the professional culture he has shaped, the careers he has launched, and the values he has modeled. His dedication to servant leadership is visible in every relationship he has built—with clients, colleagues, and the broader community.

Outside the firm, Kevin gives back through service on the IPS Foundation, Ball State’s Architecture Advisory Board, and the Indiana Architectural Foundation. He’s a Brownsburg community fixture, serving on the Little League Board of Directors, coaching youth sports and mentoring young readers, always with the same steady presence he brings to project teams.

Looking Ahead

As Schmidt Associates celebrates its 50th anniversary, Kevin’s journey stands as a testament to what long-term, values-driven leadership can achieve. From intern to chief operations officer, from hand-drawn plans to LEED-certified campuses, Kevin Shelley has built a legacy rooted in listening, learning, and lifting others up.

“It’s never been about the title. It’s about making a difference—for the people we serve and the people we work beside.”

KEVIN SHELLEY

We are honored to celebrate Kevin as part of our legacy and deeply privileged to have his voice shaping our future.
