What if your next project could move faster, stay more aligned, and feel more connected from the outset?
When architecture and engineering come from the same team, it’s not just more efficient—it creates a more thoughtful, collaborative process that keeps your goals at the center. This approach reduces delays, minimizes change orders, and ensures solutions are practical long after occupancy.
At Schmidt Associates, our integrated Architecture and Engineering teams work together from the initial conversation through project completion. This isn’t about convenience—it’s about delivering a seamless, highly coordinated design experience that reduces risk and elevates outcomes.
Listening First. Designing Better.
For Brad Wallace, a senior mechanical designer at Schmidt Associates, our work with Lebanon Community School Corporation was more than another assignment—it was personal. He grew up in Lebanon and went to school in the district, walking the same halls he was now helping redesign.
Early in the process, our architecture and engineering teams met with the district’s facilities staff to understand their day-to-day challenges, long-term goals, and preferences. These weren’t one-off meetings—they evolved into a steady dialogue built on mutual respect and a shared focus on practical, forward-thinking solutions.
By truly listening to those who know the building best, we’re applying Better Insight—designing solutions that reflect real-world needs and long-term use.
At Lebanon Middle School, the team discovered a key challenge: maintenance staff were climbing a ladder to reach the roof and service equipment—a setup that wasn’t sustainable or safe.

A small design decision—sparked by a single conversation—ended up making a significant difference to those who use and maintain the building every day.
“It seems minor,” Wallace said, “but for the people maintaining the building every day, it was everything.”
While this example comes from a school project, the same integrated approach benefits clients across all sectors—helping teams move forward with greater clarity, confidence, and long-term operational success.
More Candor. Faster Solutions.
In-house collaboration means open communication and earlier problem-solving. When engineers are part of the same firm, they can raise concerns early without hesitation, resulting in faster alignment and fewer downstream surprises for the Owner. When engineers and architects work side by side, they can raise concerns quickly and resolve them before they become roadblocks.
During our work with Lebanon Schools, the architectural team envisioned a striking wood-and-metal ceiling that would have added a dramatic, high-end look to the space. It was visually compelling—but the engineering team quickly flagged a concern: the design would obstruct access to important piping and valves located above the ceiling. The architectural team took that feedback from the engineering team and responded with a thoughtful refinement that maintained the design’s impact while addressing the concern.
Because of that early collaboration, the issue was resolved long before it reached the Owner, ensuring the final solution balanced both aesthetics and long-term maintainability—without the need for costly redesigns.
This kind of early collaboration reflects our commitment to Better Foresight—surfacing concerns before they become costly roadblocks. That kind of alignment leads to faster decisions, smoother project flow, and fewer costly revisions.
Shared Accountability. Higher Standards.
With Schmidt Associates, architecture and engineering teams share full ownership of the outcome—working as one to uphold a unified standard of excellence while keeping the Owner’s needs at the forefront.
This shared mindset ensures the right questions are asked up front:
- What systems does your team already understand and prefer?
- What struggle has the maintenance staff had to deal with?
- Which manufacturers fit your operations?
- What long-term choices will support your team best?
This shared accountability sets the stage for Better On-Site performance—minimizing surprises during construction and setting the Owner up for long-term success.
“In the end it’s the Owner’s building—and they’re the ones who have to take care of it for the next 20 years and beyond. We have to give them a system they want and a system they know how to work on. We wouldn’t be serving the owner properly if we don’t listen to their wants and needs,” Wallace said.
One Team. One Goal. Your Success.
At Schmidt Associates, integrated design is more than a process—it’s a commitment to the Owner’s goals, the project team, and the people who use the space every day. When architects and engineers work together from start to finish, the result is fewer roadblocks, more informed decisions, and facilities designed with intention and care. It’s a smarter, more responsive approach that supports long-term success and keeps projects moving forward—on time, on budget, and aligned with what matters most.
