We are thrilled to share an exciting update on our work at Second Presbyterian Church, where we are nearing the completion of a significant addition to Milner Chapel—a new pipe organ balcony.

Having been a member of Second Presbyterian Church since the fall of 1994, it’s safe to say I know my way around the building we call our church home. As an architect with Schmidt Associates, I have had the good fortune to work on several building improvement projects, including the renovation of the narthex restrooms and usher room, the re-imagining of the CenterPoint Counseling suite, and most recently, the design for a new balcony in Milner Chapel that will soon become the home to a new custom pipe organ built by Richards, Fowkes & Co.

The design of this balcony required a careful balance—drawing physical proportions from its functional use while also capturing the visual essence of the chapel to ensure it feels like it has always been there. It was crucial to “touch” the existing space as lightly as possible. The placement of this balcony was truly a ‘surgical insertion,’ as the supporting columns had to extend through multiple floors, the supporting columns had to extend through multiple floor levels to reach soil on which to bear. The work also involved creating a space within the 4th-floor classroom to house the blower equipment for the new organ.

Beyond the balcony itself, this project will bring additional enhancements to Milner Chapel, including accessible seating spaces for wheelchairs, acoustical improvements, new lighting and controls, and state-of-the-art audio-visual installations. I am immensely proud to be part of this project, which has allowed me to contribute to the ministry of my church home in a meaningful way. Working with Dr. Michelle Louer, Dr. John Allegar, and Rev. Chris Henry has been a wonderful opportunity to enhance worship in Milner Chapel for its many uses.

This project is a testament to the power of collaboration and community, and we are honored to play a role in shaping this sacred space. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue our work on this and other projects that make a lasting impact on our communities.
