We Asked What Matters Most. Here’s What You Told Us.

Ask a group of people what matters most, and you’d expect as many different answers as there are people in the group. We tried it this year, and what came back surprised us: again and again, in different words, the same idea: people.
This year, we celebrated 50 years of Schmidt Associates. At each open house, Owners, partners, employees, alumni, and friends found a puzzle beneath a sign that read: “Built Together. What builds strong communities? Share a word or short phrase that matters most to you. Add your piece to our puzzle.”

People did exactly that, one piece at a time. Once we started reading them side by side, it stopped being a story about a puzzle. It became something closer to a portrait of what Schmidt Associates is built on. Fifty years in the AEC industry builds a legacy you can see: schools, hospitals, community centers, buildings across the Midwest people can walk into and touch. But when we asked what matters most, few people wrote about the buildings. They wrote about something else.
People, Again and Again
Trust. Good listening. Cooperation. Grace and patience. Compassion. Teamwork. Friends. Partnership. Comradery. Strong connections. One person wrote a plain “Relationships.” Another wrote “Strong people,” underlined with an exclamation point.
One piece put it better than any mission statement could:
“Be the mortar to help hold things together, brick by brick.”
We design buildings for a living, and whoever wrote that line put into words something we’ve always hoped was true: the material holding fifty years together was never the brick. It was the mortar, the people in between, doing the quiet work of listening, showing up for Owners, and leading by serving them first.
Family, and the Community it Grew Into
The relationship theme didn’t stay confined to colleagues and Owners. A separate cluster of answers skipped the office altogether and went straight home: “Family,” “Families,” “Strong families.” At an event built around fifty years of professional history, some people didn’t write about the work. They wrote about who they were doing it for.
From there, the same instinct widened outward into place: “Strong community,” “Connection to community,” and “Leveraging global connections to build local prosperity.” People matter first at home, then in the neighborhoods this firm builds in.

What it Takes
Not every piece reached for a feeling. Others answered with what it takes to keep an organization running for half a century.
Leadership came up several times, but never alone; it was always paired with a word shaping it: courageous, servant, bold, committed. Servant leadership, especially, isn’t new here. It’s the same principle Wayne Schmidt founded the firm on in 1976: if you want to lead a project, serve the Owner first.
Other answers pointed at the machinery underneath everything else: strong support programs, communications, strong financial planning, hard work, opportunity. A handful trusted a single word to carry something larger: faith, humility, integrity, diversity, intention, hope and peace.

Everything, Held Together
Read together, the wall reflects two things: what people feel, and what it takes. “Trust” and “Hard work.” “Family” and “Strong financial planning.” “Bold leadership” and “Faith.” Neither tells the whole story alone. Fifty years isn’t built on sentiment alone, nor on discipline alone. It takes both, written by people who each brought their own idea of what matters and trusted it would fit somewhere.
The Piece We’re Still Missing
A puzzle is supposed to end with every piece in place. Ours doesn’t.
After the open houses, our team sat down to assemble everyone’s answers into one completed puzzle. They got all the way there, but one piece was missing. It’s not on the table. It’s not in the box. Maybe someone walked off with a small piece of Schmidt Associates without meaning to. Maybe it’s still sitting on a chair somewhere in our building. We don’t know.

But the missing piece doesn’t feel like something to fix. It feels fitting. We asked what builds something lasting fifty years, and the answers kept circling back to people. A community isn’t built in a single afternoon. Neither is the answer. There’s always one more piece coming: a new Owner, a new hire, a new project, a new person who shows up and, without knowing it yet, becomes some of the mortar holding the rest of it up.
We asked what matters most. Answer after answer circled back to the same idea: each other. It was never going to fit neatly in a box, and we’re glad it doesn’t.
The puzzle isn’t finished, and neither is our story. Learn more about our 50 years, and read more stories like this one, at schmidt-arch.com/50years.
