From a young age, Rebecca was drawn to the contrast in communities she experienced growing up and the way the built environment reflected those differences. That early observation sparked a passion not only for architecture, but for meaningful design that drives equity and connection. As an architectural graduate at Schmidt Associates, she brings that passion to life through collaboration, curiosity, and client-centered solutions.
Keep reading to learn how Rebecca is channeling her creativity and purpose into impactful design.
INTRODUCTION AND INSPIRATION
What inspired you to pursue a career in architecture?
I grew up on two different sides of town and I always found the differences between one built environment to another interesting as it was clear that there were financial disparities between the two. I wanted to find a way to change the disparities in the built environment and I always found interest in creating art with different mediums, which led me to architecture.
As someone early in your career, what made Schmidt Associates feel like the right fit?
I originally worked at a small firm for about 3½ years, and I learned quite a lot about the industry, but I always knew that I would want to experience a larger firm at some point to keep my background well rounded. Schmidt seemed like a great option for me as they are larger than my previous firm without being too big, and they came highly recommended by those around me.
Design Philosophy
You’ve mentioned a passion for uncovering client needs. How do you approach that process?
I thoroughly enjoy uncovering the unique needs of each Owner and transforming them into thoughtful, functional designs. I believe the journey to the right solution is rarely linear. Instead, embracing the winding path of discovery leads to creating spaces that exceed expectations.
What design trends or movements are currently inspiring your work?
I love the mixture between old existing buildings and new modern styles. One of my favorite places to visit and appreciate that sort of architecture is Montreal, Canada. Montreal is a beautiful city that shows the old city mixing together with new modern styles. I think the contrast can be done really well, but I don’t like it when it looks like it doesn’t belong in that space at all.
Collaboration is central to what we do. How do you think strong collaboration shapes a successful project?
Teamwork is imperative for successful design and delivering the best results to a client. Having different people offer their perspectives allows for a well-rounded design.
Schmidt Associates is grounded in servant leadership. How has that influenced your experience so far?
Servant leadership is a big part of the way Schmidt Associates’ functions, and I find myself looking for ways that I can lead with that in the forefront of my mind at all times. One of the main ways is taking on tasks that may have not been distributed to me yet and offering to help others whenever possible, just as everyone else at Schmidt does.
Career Aspirations
What are you hoping to accomplish in your career and during your time here?
I aim to be licensed one day, and I am considering the possibility of being a PM or a business development liaison down the road. I enjoy interfacing with clients and making connections with those in the industry, so I could see myself making the switch to business development eventually.
What legacy do you hope to leave on the architecture industry?
I want people to think of me as someone who has unwavering determination, ensuring no challenge is too great. I want them to think of me and know they can count on me to find creative solutions and deliver meaningful results to the client always.
How do you continue learning and growing in your role? What helps you stay sharp and push your skills forward?
I like to attend lunch and learns that talk about how different materials and standards are changing, and I support students at universities by showing up to their pinups and final presentations. I love going to thesis presentations because there is always something new to be taught through the research of others who have spent a significant amount of time on their projects.
Life Outside the Studio
Outside of work, what do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I enjoy going on bike rides with my husband and stepdaughter whenever the weather allows it, watching movies and TV, listening to audiobooks, and going to the gym. I am a rather simple person who likes to keep it lowkey and just spend time with family and friends whenever I can.
Rebecca’s commitment to thoughtful design, collaboration, and community impact is clear in every step of her journey. With a sharp eye for both aesthetics and purpose and a heart for servant leadership, she’s helping shape not only buildings but a more connected and inclusive future.
