Legacy isn’t just about the buildings we design. It’s about the lives we shape, the trust we earn, and the teams we strengthen along the way.
As we approach the 50th anniversary of Schmidt Associates in 2026—and what would have marked 100 years of Arrasmith—we’re celebrating the individuals whose leadership has helped define who we are. This series is about more than milestones. It’s about honoring those who built something lasting.
Few have done that more meaningfully than John “JR” Robertson.
Leading With Strategy, Integrity, and Heart
For nearly four decades, John “JR” Robertson has been a guiding force in healthcare design, transforming how facilities support healing, dignity and community across the globe.
JR combined architectural creativity with business acumen gained at the University of Kentucky to build a career grounded in strategic thinking and a deep commitment to serving others.
He quickly emerged as a trusted leader in healthcare architecture, delivering thoughtful solutions across a wide range of projects, from major hospitals to rural clinics. His approach emphasized empathy and deep listening, resulting in environments that truly reflect the needs of those they serve.

Designing Spaces That Heal: Where Vision Met Care
Throughout his career, JR became known for thoughtfully guiding complex healthcare projects from concept through completion. He approached every phase of the process with clarity and intention, beginning with strategic programming and planning, and continuing through to environments that support healing and dignity.
Since 2014, JR has focused on designing advanced cancer treatment hospitals, each supporting a full continuum of care and reflecting his steady leadership and deep commitment to patient-centered environments. These campuses often include diagnostic services (including imaging and pathology), surgical and infusion centers, women’s health facilities, and bone marrow transplant units.
His influence comes to life in a series of healthcare projects that demonstrate his thoughtful leadership, strategic focus and commitment to creating environments where people can truly heal:
Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital
Lahore and Peshawar, Pakistan
JR led the design of two major cancer hospitals that provide world-class care to underserved populations. Each facility integrates oncology diagnostics, inpatient and outpatient treatment, surgical units, and bone marrow transplant services.

Passport Health Plan Headquarters
Louisville, Kentucky
This adaptive reuse project transformed a warehouse into a dynamic, light-filled headquarters for a mission-driven healthcare organization. JR’s vision emphasized flexibility, wellness, and alignment with Passport’s community-first mission.

Bostick Nursing Center
Milledgeville, Georgia
A 280-bed skilled nursing facility where JR prioritized comfort, dignity, and operational efficiency. The layout promotes a home-like atmosphere while supporting staff effectiveness, creating a setting that serves both residents and caregivers.

Mentoring the Next Generation
JR’s impact extends well beyond physical spaces. His leadership helped shape the culture of Schmidt Associates’ Healthcare Studio—from mentoring emerging professionals to fostering lasting client relationships built on mutual respect.
In 2019, he played a pivotal role in bringing Louisville-based Arrasmith into the Schmidt Associates family. That move expanded the firm’s regional reach and laid the foundation for a collaborative, future-ready healthcare practice.
Stepping Back, Staying Engaged
Now stepping back from his role as principal-in-charge, JR will continue supporting Schmidt Associates in a consulting capacity. His influence remains embedded in the people he mentored, the processes he refined, and the values that continue to guide our healthcare work.
JR’s greatest legacy isn’t found in blueprints or floor plans, but in the people he served, the teams he led, and the confidence he inspired—the quiet pride of meaningful work, done well and with purpose.
Looking Ahead With Gratitude
As Schmidt Associates builds on the combined strength of its 50-year history and Arrasmith’s century of healthcare design, JR’s leadership stands as a bridge between both legacies—and a reminder of what thoughtful design can truly achieve.
