Josue “Josh” Tejeda Castillo has spent his career asking one simple question: How can I help?
It’s a mindset that’s guided him from his earliest days in architecture through complex healthcare and behavioral health projects—and now to Schmidt Associates as our newest healthcare architect, based in Louisville.
With more than a decade of experience across healthcare, federal, and behavioral health design, Josh brings a human-centered approach grounded in empathy, technical precision, and servant leadership.
“Design has the power to change lives—especially in healthcare. Everything from the flooring pattern to the placement of the nurse station directly affects the experience of patients and staff. That’s a responsibility I don’t take lightly.”
Josh’s portfolio includes behavioral health hospitals, federal medical facilities, and comprehensive treatment centers—projects where safety, code compliance, and thoughtful healing environments must go hand in hand. In one recent post-occupancy visit, he saw firsthand how a well-designed space could reduce patient agitation, improve staff workflows, and contribute to better outcomes.
“Behavioral health design leaves an indelible mark on you,” he explains. “When you’re asking, Could a patient use this fixture as a weapon?—you quickly realize just how much every decision matters. It forces you to balance safety with dignity and healing.”
Josh’s design philosophy is shaped by his belief in servant leadership—a natural fit for healthcare, where those providing care show up every day, often under immense pressure. As he steps into this new role, Josh is eager to support the firm’s expanding Healthcare Studio across both Indiana and Kentucky.
“Our role as designers is to show up for the people who show up for others. Let’s give them spaces that help them do their work better—with more safety, ease, and intention.”
As part of Schmidt Associates’ One Schmidt approach, Josh will collaborate on healthcare projects across both states—helping institutions deliver patient-first environments that drive better outcomes and support long-term success.
When asked what excites him most about this next chapter, Josh doesn’t hesitate: “The team. The mission. The opportunity to keep asking, How can I help?—and delivering design solutions that answer that question every day.”
