Parks are not only urban oasis’s—they strengthen community. Tyler Park is a beloved gathering place where neighbors connect, children play, and music fills the air. Now, with the addition of a new performance stage, this cherished space is evolving into an even stronger hub for culture and connection.

Veena Reddy, project architect and frequent visitor to Tyler Park, reflects on the deeper meaning behind the design:

“This project isn’t just about building a stage—it’s about designing with the environment to celebrate art, nature, and connection with one another. We designed the stage to feel like it has always been here and accommodate a variety of uses – from having a picnic, to setting up  a theater production”.

As part of its commitment to preserving and enhancing Louisville’s Olmsted-designed parks, Olmsted Parks Conservancy partnered with Schmidt Associates to ensure this addition not only enhances the park’s function but also honors its natural and historic character. Through thoughtful, sustainable design, the new stage provides a flexible venue for performances, gatherings, and quiet moments alike.

A Thoughtful Approach to a Community Treasure

Designed with a deep respect for Frederick Law Olmsted’s vision, the performance stage integrates seamlessly into the park’s landscape while maintaining its historic “egg” layout. Key design elements include:

  • Locally sourced stone that allows the stage to feel like a natural extension of the park.
  • A three-tiered layout ensuring clear sightlines for audiences and accommodating a variety of performances.
  • Natural boulders serving as seating and play elements, inviting visitors to gather and enjoy the space beyond scheduled events.
  • Built-in electrical infrastructure that supports lighting and sound while preserving the park’s serene atmosphere.

Beyond the stage, improvements to the west entrance enhance accessibility with a redesigned bus stop and parking area, ensuring seamless access for all visitors.

A Space for Celebration and Reflection

Parks provide more than recreation—they foster clarity, creativity, and renewal. Whether enjoying a concert under the stars, taking a morning walk, or finding a quiet moment on a stone bench, Tyler Park’s new stage enriches the park as both a gathering place and a personal retreat.

With this addition, Tyler Park is not just gaining a performance venue—it is becoming a stronger sanctuary for those seeking connection, inspiration, or simply a place to breathe. Thoughtful design has the power to shape communities, and this project stands as a testament to Schmidt Associates’ commitment to creating meaningful, sustainable spaces that enhance everyday life.
