With a foundation rooted in family, teamwork, and a relentless drive for efficiency, Brad has built a career focused on communication, trust, and delivering for clients. We sat down with him to learn more about his journey, what fuels his work ethic, and the lessons he’s carried from the ice rink to the project site.
How Brad’s Background in Trades and Design Led Him to Architecture
Q: What first sparked your interest in architecture — and was there a moment when you knew this was the right path for you?
I grew up surrounded by family members who worked in the construction trades, and I also had a strong interest in the design field. Architecture became the perfect blend of the two. Being exposed to both sides early on made it clear this was the right fit for me — I could stay close to the hands-on world I grew up with while also pursuing my passion for design.
Q: You’re known for being incredibly organized and detail-driven. Has that always come naturally to you, or did you grow into that part of your role?
My organizational skills and attention to detail come directly from my constant desire for efficiency. It’s just part of who I am. I’m always looking for ways to streamline processes, stay ahead of deadlines, and make projects run more smoothly — for both our team and the owners we serve.
Building Owner Trust Through Clear Communication and Strong Organization
Q: Communication is a big part of how you build trust. How do you approach keeping owners informed and confident throughout the process?
Communication is really a balancing act. Every project and every owner is a little different, and it’s important to figure out the right type, frequency, and purpose of communication. I see it as an art form — something I’m always striving to improve. The goal is to make sure owners feel confident, informed, and truly part of the process every step of the way.
Q: What’s something about being a project manager that might surprise people outside the industry?
That’s a good question — and honestly, I’m not sure I have a perfect answer. There are so many layers to the role that people might not see from the outside, from constant problem-solving to balancing competing priorities.
Q: With so many moving pieces — schedule, scope, budget — what’s your approach to keeping everything aligned without losing sight of the big picture?
I stay high-level and make sure that schedule, scope, and budget are reviewed continuously. Checking in regularly helps keep the project plan current and allows me to manage all the moving parts without getting lost in the details.
Q: How do you make sure the owner’s voice stays central from the first kickoff meeting to the final walkthrough?
It starts with truly understanding the owner and their priorities at the beginning of the project. As we move through design decisions, I constantly ask myself, “How would the owner answer this question if they were here?” Keeping that perspective front and center helps ensure the final result reflects their vision.
Leading Projects With Collaboration, Vision, and Shared Goals
Q: Of all the projects you’ve been involved in, is there one that stands out to you personally — and why?
The project that immediately comes to mind is the Community Justice Campus. It was significant not only because of its presence and appearance but also because of the incredible team involved. We had the dream team — designers, contractors, and owners — working together seamlessly. It was a project where collaboration, trust, and shared vision truly came together.
Lessons From the Ice and the Water
Q: You play ice hockey and boat in your free time. Do you find those experiences help shape how you lead or work with teams?
Absolutely. Hockey is a true team sport, and playing and coaching over the years has taught me a lot about teamwork, leadership, and finding the right role within a group. Boating, on the other hand, has been a lesson in work ethic — if you want something to stay nice, you have to put in the effort to maintain it. Both experiences have definitely shaped how I approach my work life.
Q: Outside of architecture, what helps you recharge and stay grounded?
My family and hockey are huge parts of my life. They help me recharge, stay grounded, and bring balance to the fast pace of project management.
