Wright Quad at Indiana University Bloomington underwent a comprehensive renovation to extend the life of a historic residence hall while better supporting today’s students. After decades without major updates, the University partnered with Schmidt Associates to modernize building systems, improve accessibility, and enhance student amenities while preserving the character and legacy that define Wright Quad.
The renovation integrated new mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems within the existing structure, strengthening durability through improved waterproofing, drainage, and sealed crawl spaces. Accessibility was significantly enhanced with a new elevator and targeted interior improvements. Inside, shared spaces were reimagined to promote connection and well-being, including expanded lounges, updated laundry and dining areas, and a refreshed rooftop lounge. A new classroom introduced within the residence hall supports flexible learning and reinforces the integration of living and learning. The result is a future-ready residence hall that balances historic preservation with modern comfort, accessibility, and long-term performance.
