When West End School expanded its tuition-free academic program to include girls, the decision marked an important step in advancing equity and opportunity in West Louisville. To support this vision, Schmidt Associates partnered with school leadership and teachers to design a two-story, 15,000-square-foot addition serving students in Junior Kindergarten through 4th Grade. The addition reflects the school’s legacy, culture, and spirit through bright, daylit classrooms, warm natural materials, and integrated technology, creating a welcoming environment that supports learning and a strong sense of belonging.
The project also establishes a framework for future campus growth. Schmidt Associates led a comprehensive site redevelopment to improve traffic flow, drop-off zones, parking, and wayfinding, while incorporating geothermal well fields to support long-term energy efficiency. A planned future phase will add outdoor recreational amenities, including a running track, soccer field, play area, and support pavilion. Designed in close collaboration with the school’s board, Head of School, and neighborhood stakeholders, the campus is now positioned to grow alongside the community it serves.
