Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre
The Shaukat Khanum Cancer Research Hospital will serve a region of nearly 23 million people and is the third hospital our team has designed for this client. The facility has inpatient, outpatient, surgical, and research modalities, and a large portion is dedicated to pediatric care and women’s services. This is a treatment, research, and teaching hospital with the most advanced facilities in the region. The program includes flexible training space, including simulator rooms for advanced imaging. The design is the result of extensive analysis into wind and solar conditions present at the site north of Karachi; the result was careful placement of sun-shading elements. The exoskeleton design reduces solar load on the building, thereby reducing energy consumption. Passive harvesting of wind through the use of wind towers aerates outdoor seating areas.
