IU Health Riley Hospital for Children is expanding its Neurology Department to better serve a growing pediatric patient population, with Schmidt Associates leading planning and design efforts. The project repurposes a recently vacated space to create six new exam rooms, nurse call areas, support spaces, and a dedicated checkpoint zone for collecting patient vitals. Through weekly coordination meetings, the team worked closely with hospital stakeholders to maintain momentum, streamline decision-making, and ensure the design aligns with IU Health’s clinical workflows and operational standards.
The team moved efficiently through planning while remaining responsive to project-specific needs. Thoughtful refinements—such as adjusted door swings and monitor placement—enhance patient privacy and comfort while meeting code and equipment accessibility requirements. The space will also reflect IU Health’s signature biome-themed environment, bringing the Neurology Department’s coral reef motif to life through a cohesive color palette and curated artwork. The result is a carefully planned, efficient care environment designed to support high-quality pediatric neurology services.
