Lawrence Township set out to modernize both of its high schools with a clear goal: create equitable, future-ready learning environments that present a unified identity across the district. At Lawrence North High School, Schmidt Associates responded with a transformative addition and renovation that mirrors the work completed at Lawrence Central, reinforcing the schools as equals in both design and function. A new three-story classroom addition, complete with flexible science labs and innovation spaces, anchors the project. This addition allowed for the removal of aging, inefficient portions of the building, streamlining the overall footprint and aligning it with current enrollment and academic programming—all while giving the school a fresh, community-facing identity.
The project also delivered major improvements to Lawrence North’s athletic facilities, including a new natatorium and updated baseball, softball, and soccer fields with modern amenities. Careful phasing allowed construction to occur while the building remained fully occupied, minimizing disruption to students and staff. Through thoughtful planning and strategic design, Schmidt Associates helped the district achieve its vision of parity between schools, creating an upgraded, inspiring environment where students can thrive—both inside and outside the classroom.
