LaPorte High School Performing Arts Center

Needing to transform an outdated auditorium into a performing arts center (PAC) on a constricted site while the school was occupied, Schmidt Associates developed a design that “flipped” the existing auditorium. The old back-of-house space is now seating, and the seating is the stage. A small addition allows for the state-of-the-art PAC to have a full working fly; LED theatrical lighting; sound systems; and digitally controlled, motor-assisted rigging. The acoustical reconfiguration delivers the highest quality of sound for all performance types. With increased capacity for all venues, new back-of-house facilities include a scene shop with overhead coiling doors leading directly onto the back stage and professional quality dressing rooms. The new PAC is an educational environment, as well as a highly specialized performance and celebration space that inspires both the audience and the performers.
