Kentucky State University Engineering School Master Plan
When a new president joined Kentucky State University, work began toward expanding its mission with the programming and creation of a new engineering school. This program will aid the college with recruitment and retention as well as the surrounding community with workforce development. Schmidt Associates completed an assessment to evaluate the existing Carver Hall as a potential home for the new program. Project goals were developed, including improved facility utilization, addressing deferred maintenance, and messaging to build stakeholder support. The resulting study included an assessment of the existing building, evaluation of the current spaces, spatial programming, creating of a phasing strategy and conceptual estimate, and creation of visioning graphics. These tasks were conducted in a collaborative process with the owner over a 4-month period to understand the vision for the engineering program and create a roadmap for the next five years. Design work has now begun for Phase 0 to create administrative and faculty offices and two new labs for the new program. Future phases will further address systems and maintenance issues as well as further conversion of engineering-specific spaces.
