When UofL Health’s Kentucky Spinal Cord Injury Research Center set out to expand its pediatric program, it needed more than additional space. The program required a purpose-built environment that could bring research, intensive therapy, and families together while improving efficiency for staff who had previously worked across multiple areas of the hospital. Schmidt Associates designed a centralized pediatric neurorecovery center that streamlines care, supports collaborative research, and creates a welcoming experience for children and their families.
Designed to advance both research and rehabilitation, the new space includes specialized therapy areas with ceiling track systems and treadmills for gait training, as well as motion-capture technology to support real-time research and analysis. Centralized equipment storage, dedicated family amenities, and thoughtfully designed casework improve day-to-day operations, while warm, inviting finishes create an environment that feels hopeful rather than clinical. The result is a flexible, future-ready facility that supports life-changing pediatric spinal cord injury research and therapy.
