The design of the new West Perry Branch of the Indianapolis Public Library system focuses on “bringing the outside inside,” connecting the interior to the natural elements of the landscape. Working with a design architect, the use of natural materials on the interior includes colors that mimic the environment, using green tones and stained wood in a warm and comfortable setting. A seating area with a fireplace is adjacent to the meeting room; a children’s area with interactive play areas, quiet study rooms, a computer area, cafe/vending, outdoor patio, and quiet reading nook are also available. The design included highly efficient engineering systems and solar photovoltaic panels, offsetting 80 percent of the electrical costs. Early energy analysis was performed to understand how to balance the energy efficiency of the building with the size and cost of the PV system. Schmidt Associates also helped obtain utility rebates to offset costs of the systems in the building. Schmidt Associates served as the architect-of-record and provided MEPT engineering and project management for this LEED Gold-certified project.
