The Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) and museum is known across the world. Since its construction in 1976, the museum has become outdated. As a result, the IMS Foundation hired the team of Schmidt Associates, JRA, and Shiel Sexton to re-imagine the experience. Together, the team is creating a new user-experience that will welcome visitors into an interactive space, captivating and engaging existing race fans and creating new ones simultaneously. After entering through the new, fully accessible grand entrance, visitors will find themselves immersed in multiple iconic spaces at the track—gasoline alley, the starting line, and ultimately, the Winner’s Gallery. Through the addition of a mezzanine level and the opened basement, visitors will also be treated to multiple displays of historic cars and an interactive STEAM exhibit and classroom space, making the facility an ideal location for student field trips and adult events alike. Schmidt Associates is completing the infrastructure, JRA is serving as the exhibit designer, and Shiel Sexton is the design-builder of the project.
