Illinois Fall Creek Center

Ivy Tech Community College acquired the former St. Vincent Hospital building in downtown Indianapolis to expand their course offerings and service a larger community. Schmidt Associates developed a design that upheld the integrity of the existing historic structure while providing an addition and renovation containing multi-purpose, hands-on educational space. Collaboration and community were enhanced through wayfinding, food court, coffee shop, community rooms, and multiple exterior areas—including patios and a roof deck. The resulting building’s success is evident in its demand—immediately becoming the preferred scheduled and non-scheduled venue on campus. Critically important to the success of the project was the careful planning and integration of campus-wide infrastructure. The project included comprehensive replacement of the entire MEPT system within the building and linked the new facility to existing, occupied academic space. Working closely with Ivy Tech, the campus stayed safely open and active throughout the entirety of the construction process. The unique learning environment is LEED Silver certified through its use of the air-cooled VRF system.
