Jefferson County Public SchoolsFor the first time in nearly a century, West Louisville is welcoming a new school—marking a significant investment in a historically underfunded community. Designed for 1,050 students in grades 6–8, Hudson Middle School reimagines the middle school experience through flexible classroom pods, specialized resource spaces, and an Explorer program that supports hands-on learning in consumer science, engineering, social justice, and public service. Real-world learning is embedded throughout the building, including a student-run café and a media center equipped with digital and print production tools.
The design prioritizes accessibility, inclusion, and adaptability. A gray-box theater opens to a secured outdoor courtyard to support arts, athletics, and community events, while a dedicated special needs wing provides appropriately scaled classrooms, sensory spaces, and life-skills amenities with a discreet student entrance. As part of a broader West Louisville revitalization effort, the school connects to nearby educational, health, and community resources and incorporates sustainable strategies such as geothermal energy and daylighting, creating a resilient, enduring environment that supports students, families, and the surrounding neighborhood.
