The need for a new high school in Hammond was recognized through a facilities assessment encompassing a comprehensive assessment ranking the condition and utilization of all the corporation’s facilities. Following the study, Hammond began a design process led by the planning committee with extensive public input. Of particular importance was the facility’s need to complement the existing Morton High School, a facility focused on the performing arts. Instead of a large auditorium, the new high school was designed with a black box theater. This multi-use space can house activities as diverse as theater performances to basketball practices and includes retractable auditorium seating.
The media center is a featured educational and community hub in the new building. Located on site where the original building’s historic entrance once stood, it is a celebrated symbol of the new and provides space for resource, collaboration, gathering, and meeting in its technologically rich environment.
The new facility was truly designed as a reflection of the community’s needs and public input. The design brought two school communities together, making the high school the backdrop for the new school branding as it was simultaneously being envisioned throughout construction.
Schmidt Associates also performed an energy analysis of all buildings within the School City of Hammond and applied for various rebates, securing over $100,000 at the high school alone.
