Firefly Shelter

When Firefly Children & Family Alliance faced the sudden closure of another emergency shelter, the need for additional capacity and age-appropriate spaces became urgent. The 24-hour children’s shelter required a more flexible layout to better support children of different ages, as the existing shared sleeping rooms and limited dayrooms restricted programming and care. In close collaboration with Firefly, the team reimagined the facility by converting former administrative space into individual bedrooms and adding a third dayroom, allowing each age group to learn, play, and recharge in environments designed for their needs.

The expansion also introduced new on-site services—including a doctor’s office, classrooms, and a sensory room—creating a more holistic and stable experience for children while reducing the need for off-site visits. Thoughtful design choices balance safety, supervision, and warmth through interior glazing for visibility, wood-look LVT flooring, and vibrant accent elements. Together, these improvements allow Firefly to fully accommodate 28–30 children and provide a nurturing, mission-aligned environment that supports both immediate care and long-term well-being.
