The transformation of the former Zonie’s Closet into Café Oztara blends thoughtful design with community impact. The 4,900-square-foot building, long a cultural cornerstone for Indianapolis’ LGBTQ+ community, has been fully renovated by the Damien Center, with Schmidt Associates hired to lead the architectural and design efforts. The project preserves key historic elements, such as the original bar, while introducing modern upgrades like ADA-compliant restrooms, updated utilities, a multipurpose stage, and a new secondary staircase to ensure accessibility for all visitors. A 520-square-foot addition replaces a rear structure, providing essential amenities and aligning with sustainable building practices.
The interior design features upgraded modern furniture and bold accents, creating a welcoming environment with a wow factor that invites customers and enhances the space’s vibrancy. These thoughtful details ensure that the facility is not only functional but also inspiring, reinforcing its role as a hub for connection and renewal. The space houses a coffee shop, art gallery, employment center, and administrative offices, enabling the Damien Center to expand services such as job-search assistance, professional development, and workshops that support over 500 individuals annually.
This adaptive reuse project honors the legacy of Zonie’s Closet while reinforcing the Damien Center’s mission of wellness and renewal. Café Oztara stands as a testament to the enduring impact of community-focused design.
