Combs Hall at Kentucky State University has undergone a bold transformation. What was once an aging, outdated residence hall is now a modern, student-focused living environment built for comfort, community, and longevity. Once burdened by health and safety concerns, the redesigned facility reflects KSU’s commitment to raising the bar for on-campus housing and creating spaces where students can thrive.
Schmidt Associates worked closely with the University to overhaul the building from top to bottom. New systems, roofing, and windows were paired with a tighter, more efficient building envelope to improve performance and eliminate past issues with water infiltration. Inside, every detail was considered: concrete-look flooring for durability, warm wood accents for character, and neutral finishes that give students a fresh canvas to make their own. Updated restrooms, a larger laundry room, and inviting common areas—including a community kitchen—support both function and connection.
Outside, new patios, ADA-compliant walkways, and reimagined green space expand student life beyond the walls. With resilient materials and a strong focus on air quality and wellness, Combs Hall isn’t just another dorm, it’s a future-ready living space designed to support the student experience from every angle.
