Slate Run Elementary School
Schmidt Associates worked with New Albany-Floyd Community School Corporation on two new elementary schools—Green Valley and Slate Run. The two elementary schools were designed to be equitable, but aesthetically different to capture the essence of each individual site and community. As with all prototypes, there are differences designed to meet each community’s needs. Slate Run’s stately entry re-imagined the “little red schoolhouse,” creating a welcoming appearance contextual to the neighborhood. Other key goals for the project included improved safety, security, and control of both the site and the building, along with improved flow and wayfinding. Spaces were designed to provide resources and wraparound services to the community while providing access to technology that supports 21st century learning. Working with the school leadership, the interiors were designed to create a calm, comfortable environment with warm wood tones and a scale appropriate to smaller children. Within the cafeteria, the schoolhouse imagery reappears in a playful element that allows the media center to be integrated into the two-story volume.
