Schmidt Associates worked with Greenwood Community School Corporation on a new 6-8th grade, 900-student middle school. Extensive early energy modeling helped determine the most efficient design. The resulting facility has a three-story classroom wing, with the 6th grade housed on the third floor and the 7th and 8th grades on the second and first floors. It was designed to be 49% more energy efficient than code with a projected $98,000 in annual utility savings. The HVAC system is a 4-pipe hydronic system. Each classroom has its own vertical unit ventilator with energy recovery. The result is a quiet, efficient, easy-to-maintain system. The resulting facility includes space for the community and district in a community/training room directly off of the media center, Project Lead the Way (PLTW) and robotics space, collaboration space for teachers, and pull-out resource rooms on each floor. The site includes a new football field, track, and practice fields.
