With 20 years at Schmidt Associates, Robin Leising has seen projects evolve from blueprints to reality, bringing her passion for construction administration to every job site. From navigating industry challenges to embracing new technologies, Robin’s experience offers valuable insights into the ever-changing world of architecture and construction.

The Role of a Construction Administrator

What inspired you to pursue architecture and, ultimately, a career in construction administration?

When I was in middle school, my dad brought home some blueprints, and that was when I decided I wanted to be an architect. Over time, however, I realized I enjoyed being in the field more than sitting in front of owners or behind a desk.

As a construction administrator, you play a crucial role in ensuring projects are completed on time and within budget. What’s the most rewarding part of your job?

Seeing a project completed. Not all projects run smoothly, and sometimes not every team member is a perfect match, but when you reach the end of a project and see how it benefits the user or the community, it’s incredibly rewarding.

Construction sites can be unpredictable. How do you approach problem-solving when unexpected challenges arise?

All challenges should be approached with a team mentality. Don’t tell me we can’t achieve a detail or a schedule—let’s find solutions that benefit everyone. No blame, just cooperation.

You’ve mentioned enjoying tasks that push you out of your comfort zone. Can you share an example of a project or situation where you had to adapt and grow?

I wouldn’t say I enjoy being out of my comfort zone, but recently, I’ve been involved in more client interviews. Typically, I’m just part of the team, but during the Westfield Washington Schools interview, I had a specific portion to present. That was a new challenge for me.

Being a Woman in Construction

With only one in ten construction workers being women, how have you navigated the industry, and what advice would you give to other women looking to enter the field?

I try to just consider myself as one of the guys. I don’t expect to be treated differently just because I’m a woman. I focus on my work and skills rather than differences. My advice to other women is to be confident in your knowledge, stay curious, and not be afraid to take up space in the industry.

What changes or shifts in the industry have you seen that excite you? What changes would you still like to see?

The construction process itself hasn’t changed much over time, but the integration of new technology into buildings has been the biggest shift. Keeping up with rapid advancements is a challenge, and we need to keep that in mind when designing.

Leadership and Collaboration

Fostering a cooperative and supportive environment is key to your approach. How do you ensure that every team member feels empowered to contribute their best?

I encourage them to ask questions and spend time on-site to see how buildings are actually constructed. This helps younger staff understand details in real life rather than just on a screen.

What qualities do you think make for a successful construction administrator?

Communication and taking ownership of the project. There are so many moving parts in what we do, so it’s essential to communicate effectively—not just with the owner and design team but with contractors as well. You can’t rely on someone else to do it for you.

Looking Ahead

After 20 years at Schmidt Associates, what excites you most about the future of the industry? Are there any trends or innovations you’re particularly interested in?

I love seeing how technology—such as drones and creative software—can improve communication throughout a project. But I also believe we need to maintain face-to-face interactions because they are just as valuable as new technology.

What’s one project you’ve worked on that stands out as particularly meaningful or impactful to you?

Going through all the projects I’ve worked on, I’d have to say PR Mallory stands out the most. It was incredible to take a building that many thought should be torn down and transform it into a beautiful, functional space that will help educate future generations.

Beyond the Job Site

Outside of work, what are some of your favorite ways to unwind and recharge?

I enjoy reading and crafting. Recently, I’ve also started gardening.

How do your personal interests or hobbies influence your approach to work?

My husband and I have been renovating our 125-year-old house for the past 25 years. This hands-on experience keeps me connected to the work that contractors do and reminds me of the expertise they bring to their craft every day.

Robin’s journey highlights the impact of perseverance, teamwork, and adaptability in the construction industry. Whether problem-solving on-site or mentoring the next generation of professionals, she continues to make a lasting mark on every project she touches.
