Kentucky State University Dorm Renovation Study
Faced with an urgent need for more housing, Kentucky State University teamed with Schmidt Associates to assess six dormitories to prioritize deferred maintenance needs and bring the buildings up to par with other student housing options. The resulting assessment evaluated issues that reduce the occupancy capacity, such as dated designs with underutilized square footage, maintenance issues, and failing systems. Because of the urgent need on campus, it was determined Combs Hall would be the first facility to undergo a renovation, and design began while the remainder of the assessment was completed. The renovation will result in new systems, roof, windows, interior finishes, and an improved building envelope. The remaining five dorms were also assessed, determining prioritization of needs and a roadmap for the future.
