An historic federal courthouse was renovated into the new College of Business for Indiana State University. Classrooms and high-tech trading facilities permeate the existing facility, while a small addition to the south façade provides a huge opportunity to create student dining and commons space. Full of historic character, the facility required a two-phase renovation to provide students with flexible learning environments and updated technology. Schmidt Associates created a new entry to mimic the timeless limestone façade of the building. We retained the historic character of the building with plaster-arched ceilings, decorative painting, marble wainscoting, and decorative light fixtures. Simultaneously, high-tech flexible classrooms, meeting space, mock interview rooms, and a trading lab were spread throughout the facility, optimizing its use. A student-run café and gathering space in the lower level builds community and offers students a place to collaborate.
