In developing a new student housing project, the University of Indianapolis incorporated campus life while emphasizing life in a major metropolitan area. Schmidt Associates worked with the University to develop a modern living facility for upperclassmen. The resulting design incorporated a 196-unit residence hall furnished with one to four bedrooms, private baths, kitchens, living areas, and washer and dryers. The building wings incorporate various lounges along with a central commons, bringing together students while creating flexibility for movement throughout the building. With these amenities, students feel right at home while they are pursuing their degrees. Having a modern yet timeless design palette was key to attracting new tenants. The apartment corridors have a hospitality feel to help differentiate the commons spaces from the living spaces. Along with the higher-end finishes in the apartments, the common spaces and public spaces were designed with particular details to tie into the building’s exterior façade.
“Schmidt Associates wanted to understand our narrative and our need. They took the time to understand… and I want to thank them for their genius in design in doing that.”
