Indiana State Fairgrounds Assessment and Master Plan
This project was developed to evaluate multiple structures and landscapes in relation to each other for phased improvements. The project involved 1,000,000 SF of facilities and landscapes that required assessment and planning for modernization and improvements. Schmidt Associates led this master planning effort, coordinating a complicated team with multiple subconsultants. The team conducted an extensive facility assessment to evaluate the existing condition and energy use, which helped identify areas that required the most attention. Strategic options for prioritization and phasing of work were created based on the available capital, the Fair Board’s strategic plan, and input from a wide range of users and stakeholders. The aim of the project was to create a roadmap for the phased implementation of the master plan. The team evaluated existing facilities and proposed new ones to improve the fairground’s overall functionality, efficiency, and user experience. The team also considered sustainable and environmentally responsible practices in all phases of the planning. The phased implementation of the master plan is currently underway. Significant progress is being made to bring the fairgrounds up to modern standards and improve the visitor experience. This project serves as a model for how strategic planning, facility assessment, and modernization can revitalize public facilities for the benefit of the community.
