Great design should surprise, delight, astonish, engage, and reward. For the owners and users of that design, the process by which it develops should not be a mystery. At Schmidt Associates, we believe an open design approach is the best approach.
Open Design Means No Closed Doors
Every professional with specialized knowledge can offer their knowledge in one of two very different ways. Either they can use it to baffle and blind, creating mystery and deflecting questions with technicalities and complexities, or they can share their insights to build understanding. They can ensure their client is invited into the process and not kept behind metaphorical, or even physical, closed doors. Our Schmidt Associates’ Workplace Studio team is dedicated to the open door approach. We believe all our clients and key stakeholders should enjoy access to the complete design and development process.
This means our clients don’t just take possession at the end of the contract. Also, it means involvement – right from the outset. We work closely with all profiles of owner, from developers and corporations to owners of small businesses. We open the design book at the first page, explaining clearly how we propose to understand their needs, aspirations, and constraints. Then we proceed on a basis of full disclosure at every stage. From discovery, through development to delivery, every action we take has a clear rationale we are happy to share. If anything we do is unclear, we will not rest until we have provided full clarification.
Design Mystique Is Intriguing. Designer Mystery Is Not.
If you have experienced a design and construction process that is more mystery tour than creative mystique, you might consider a more transparent approach to your next project. Our team welcomes questions, encourages collaboration, and is always more than happy to make our work totally clear. After all, we are doing it for you.
