The Schmidt Associates K-12 team believes that no two schools are the same, resulting in distinctive designs. No two school designs should therefore look the same.
Individualized Learning Demands Individualized, Distinctive Designs
The whole of our K-12 design philosophy is driven by a passionate conviction that the finished design must evolve from a growing understanding of the unique needs of its users – students, educators, and the community. And because no two groups ever have identical requirements and aspirations, no two finished designs are ever the same. Therefore, we don’t do “cookie cutter”: to ensure our clients experience a unique reflection of their own situation, and not a repeat of our existing portfolio.
When you visit a Schmidt Associates-designed school, you are surrounded by the culmination of a collaborative process, through which stakeholders also play a key role as co-creators. This role is much more than marginal, and it is certainly not accidental. Before we go to the drawing board, we turn to the community. We draw together stakeholders who have the opportunity both to share their needs from design and to contribute directly to the process, through our highly participative pre-design phase.
The Building Fabric Draws From The Fabric Of The Community
Our discovery phase regularly sees students, educators, parents, and community members literally getting around the table to help our team understand what they want and need from a transformational learning space. Working together in three dimensions, we approach the challenge of developing and delivering an above expectations design as a three-dimensional puzzle. Our stakeholders identify the pieces of the puzzle themselves, and they manipulate the individual elements toward a solution. It’s involving. It’s energizing. And it removes any sense that a final design is being imposed without their input.
We Turn The K-12 Design Challenge Inside-out.
So many architects work from the outside in, retro fitting pre-conceived, pre-existing designs and approaches to the unique needs of individual schools and communities. This is simply not the Schmidt Associates’ K-12 way. Throughout Indiana, we can show you examples of highly successful “inside-out” designs, where the final approaches stem directly from the input of their stakeholders.
