Project Overview
Deeply rooted in the heart of downtown Indianapolis, Vision Academy at Riverside needed a space that could accommodate 500 Pre-K through 6th students in a facility that could complement and integrate seamlessly into the surrounding neighborhood. Working closely with the staff and administrators, Schmidt Associates delivered a design that paid special attention to multiple learning environments and spaces. Each classroom has direct access to break out resource spaces. These resource spaces were designed with glass enclosures, enabling the students to work in resource rooms, while feeling connected and supervised. The cafeteria consists of glass garage doors that open to the east and west. When opened, the students have a connection to the environment outside that contains native plantings and a student-driven urban garden. The new facility is a successful collaboration between community and school where each can benefit from the building and its environment.
