To meet the needs of modern students, Ball State University needed to re-imagine its 50-year-old, eight-story Studebaker East Dormitory. The goal of the project was to create a new residence hall that would provide a comfortable home away from home for international students. Understanding the needs of the students living in the space, Schmidt Associates and SCB designed a transformational building that provides a sense of community for current and prospective students. Bringing Studebaker East into the new millennium gives the residents the allure of the new, while repurposing the original building. The aesthetics have been recreated with a new brick, limestone façade. Student collaboration is enhanced through a new multi-purpose room and three 2-story lounge spaces. Engineering new, highly-efficient mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and technology systems throughout the building resulted in a LEED Gold certified residence hall.
