Project Overview
Shaukat Khanum Memorial Hospital and Research Centre located in Karachi, Pakistan will serve a region of nearly 23 million people. It is the third hospital that we have designed for this client. The facility is over 800,000 sq. ft. with inpatient, outpatient, surgical and research modalities. A large portion of the facility is dedicated to pediatric care and to women’s services.
The design of the building is the result of extensive analysis into wind and solar conditions present at the site north of Karachi. The result was careful placement of sun shading elements. The exo-skeleton design reduces solar load on the building thereby reducing energy consumption. Passive harvesting of wind through the use of wind towers aerates outdoor seating areas.
