At Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), the historic Rotary Building is an iconic campus structure that sits adjacent to one of the new front doors of the university grounds. Critical to the success of the IU School of Medicine, the facility needed renovation to meet the needs of the future. Schmidt Associates was contracted to create a bridge between the historic building and its modern amenities. The project included restoring the structure’s exterior, extensive reprogramming of the space, the addition of a central communicating stair, the improvement of the building envelope, as well as entirely new mechanical and electrical systems throughout the building. Schmidt Associates was able to design a modern medical office and support space, serving as the operating room in which students of the IU School of Medicine can hone their skills and promises to be one of the most desired spaces on the IUPUI campus.
