Project Overview
The Indiana Historical Society (IHS) was designed and built to look and feel historic with traditional materials and details throughout—from the wood trim, to the column capitals, to the marble floor. After occupying the building for 10 years, Schmidt Associates was hired by the IHS board to upgrade the facility amenities to enhance the visitor experience, increase attendance, and make a major interior renovation—all seamlessly integrating with the original building.
The design team filled in an open, two-story atrium, providing IHS with additional square footage without an addition to the building. The top floor now offers a welcome desk, expanded bookstore, reception area, and gathering space for theater patrons. The lower level houses a renovated cafe that features a simulated night sky, and is aptly called the Stardust cafe in honor of the Hoagy Carmichael song.
