Project Overview
An abandoned Shelbyville strip mall—once housing a Marsh grocery store, retail areas, and a bank—was transformed into the Golden Bears Preschool, SENSES gym for children with special needs, and the school corporation’s administrative offices. The centralized preschool includes 15 classrooms, a cafeteria, and outdoor play area. In addition, the preschool has a one-of-a-kind indoor playground designed specifically for the development of preschool-aged children.
The SENSES area includes several different types of spaces, such as a classroom with special lighting that can be dimmed or change colors to serve as a calming room for children with special sensory needs.
The new administration office area is now located in what was the bank at the end of the shopping center. It includes open and private offices and a large flexible boardroom. The old bank’s drive-up area is now used for covered outdoor seating.
