Project Overview
Founded in 1851, the Sisters of St. Francis have a strong tradition and strong ties to the communities that they have called home for many years. The Sisters of St. Francis needed additional rooms for the retiring Sisters returning to the Motherhouse. Schmidt Associates completed a feasibility study of the original convent building, built in 1881, to determine the viability of renovating two floors of the building into 17 residence rooms while protecting the historic integrity of the structure. Critical to the project was the integration of new air conditioning, lighting, and fully accessible restrooms. Nearly 130 years after the original convent was built, we were able to provide a space that honors the long-standing traditions of the facility and the Sisters of St. Francis.
