Project Overview
The Children’s TherAplay Foundation is the largest pediatric hippotherapy facility in the country. Utilizing equine movement as a treatment tool, Children’s TherAplay Center provides physical and occupational therapies for children with a wide variety of special needs. Schmidt Associates helped TherAplay radically re-imagine clinical support spaces. The addition and renovation created new therapy gyms, offices, and space for families.
The clinical environments, from top to bottom, are tailored to making the experience enjoyable for kids and families. The facility incorporates finishes like wood textures and western-inspired patterns to create an environment that is homey and welcoming. Patients of Children’s TherAplay Center spend one or two hours at the clinic per session, so our team designed waiting areas with workstations overlooking the barn so parents have space to work or watch during their child’s therapy session.
Of critical importance, the movement of kids, parents, staff, horses, and vehicles was redesigned to allow everyone to safely access and occupy the space. The addition includes a mudroom next to the reception area, giving patients a dedicated area to suit up for hippotherapy sessions. Our team also added public restrooms to the front of the clinic. Though these considerations may feel obvious, the creation and thoughtful placement of these types of facilities make a world of difference to the Center’s staff and patients who are better able to use the building because of them.
Phase II of the Children’s TherAplay addition and renovation, a large gathering space, is ready to begin construction.
