The Chapel Hill 7th and 8th Grade Center is a flexible and transformational education environment for the 1,400 students that share the space. Looking to increase collaboration space for the students, the school was divided into two zones – a classroom zone and a public/shared zone. With an increasing student population, there was a need to expand the performing arts area, media center, and cafeteria. The technologically advanced and collaborative media center became the central hub for all student teams along with the community. Schmidt Associates utilized some of the existing elements of the original building to create a new gym and auditorium, effectively fusing the old building with the new.
