History
In January of 2020, Schmidt Associates welcomed a Louisville-based design firm into our family. Arrasmith, a Schmidt Associates Company, now serves as our Kentucky office and helms our Healthcare Studio.
Together, our expanded firm has a combined legacy of more than 130 years, as well as projects in 28 states and seven countries, including the United Kingdom, Turkey, India, and Pakistan.
Schmidt Associates, Est. 1976
On July 4, 1976, architect Wayne Schmidt declared his own form of independence, founding Schmidt Associates in downtown Indianapolis with a single employee, himself. Over the next 44 years, the firm grew to more than 100 employees and expanded to offer a full suite of architecture, landscape architecture, interior design, and engineering services.
With a specialty in education design—both K-12 and higher ed—the firm has completed countless projects at many of the school districts, colleges, and universities across Indiana. In addition to education work, the firm has also focused on projects that promote life-long learning, community enrichment, and urban renewal.
The firm played a pivotal role in the revitalization of Indianapolis’ Mass Ave neighborhood, including the restoration of the Hammond Block building, the current Schmidt Associates office, and the new construction of Penrose on Mass. Other notable projects over the course of the firm’s history include multiple residence halls at Ball State University, Ivy Tech’s Illinois Fall Creek Center, Marian University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine, and the adaptive reuse of the P.R. Mallory factory.
Arrasmith, a Schmidt Associates Company, Est. 1926
Bringing their talents together in 1926, established architects William Arrasmith and Herman Wischmeyer founded Wischmeyer & Arrasmith in Louisville, KY. More than 90 years later, the firm is now known as Arrasmith, a Schmidt Associates Company.
In the early days of the firm, William became known for the Art Moderne streamline style of architecture incorporated into his Greyhound bus stations across the country. A variety of notable landmarks in the Louisville area also bear the mark of Arrasmith, like the city’s first airport at Bowman Field and the iconic 800 Building.
The firm’s history of healthcare design began in the 1960s with the Methodist Evangelical Hospital in Louisville. This forayed into ongoing work with many other health systems in Kentucky, including Kentucky’s first LEED-certified research building at the University of Louisville’s Clinical & Translational Research Building and the state’s first LEED-certified hospital at U of L Health: Medical Center South.
